Hey there, entrepreneurs and beauty professionals. If you’re a barber, hairdresser, nail technician, beauty therapist, or cosmetologist, listen up. You need to be licensed! This licence is a requirement to register your business name at the Companies Office of Jamaica (COJ). A copy must be submitted with your business name registration. You can get this licence at your local Municipal Council/ Parish Council.

Today, we’re giving some insights on the requirements to get your licence from the Parish Council. It may seem like a lot, but you want to be on the right side of the law so you can focus on what really matters- serving your customers!

Let’s start with individual practitioners. If you’re just getting started, here’s what you need to apply for your license.

First, gather these documents: A valid ID—passport, driver’s license, or national ID, Your TRN—Taxpayer Registration Number, Two passport-sized photographs, a Health Permit from the public health department in your parish – (a receipt is accepted), and your certification or a letter from a Notary Public, a Justice of the Peace or a Lawyer.

You’ll take all of that to your parish council and put in your application for licensing. If you have everything you need, your application will  be approved and you’ll receive your official license booklet provided by the Parish Council.

Now once you get your license, you’ll need to renew it every year. Just bring your ID, TRN, one passport photo, and your Health Permit.

If you operate without a license, you’ll be charged for the unlicensed period, so don’t delay.

If you own a barbershop, beauty salon, or spa, you also need a license. Here’s what you need to know.

You’ll need your ID, TRN and two passport sized photographs.

The fees depend on what business you’re operating. Check with your municipal council for the current list of fees.

The process is simple:

  1. Submit your application to the Public Health Department in your parish.
  2. An inspection will be conducted.
  3. If everything checks out, you’ll get placed on the approval list, and your license will be issued.

The expiration date is visible on your license, so set a reminder and renew on time. If you’re operating without a license, you’ll be charged for the period you weren’t compliant.

After you have your licence, you can go ahead and register your business at the COJ. Please ensure the licence you received matches the nature you insert on your form!

Avoid the hassle and get legal today.
