Have you noticed that living in Jamaica feels a lot more expensive lately?

From rent to groceries to electricity, many Jamaicans say their money just isn’t stretching as far as it used to. And the big question people are asking is: Is Jamaica becoming too expensive to live in?

Let’s start with housing.

Over the past few years, the cost of buying or renting a home in Jamaica has climbed sharply. In many parts of Kingston, monthly rent for a modest apartment can now run well over J$150,000. At the same time, property prices have surged as developers build more high-end units and demand continues to grow.

For young professionals trying to buy their first home, that dream is starting to feel out of reach.

Then there’s food.

Jamaica imports a large portion of what it eats, which means global price changes show up quickly at the supermarket. Even though inflation has slowed compared with the spikes a few years ago, many grocery bills are still much higher than before the pandemic.

Utilities are another major factor.

Electricity costs in Jamaica are heavily tied to global oil prices. When fuel prices rise, the fuel charge on electricity bills rises too. For households and businesses alike, that can push monthly expenses even higher.

And when you combine higher rent, higher food prices, and higher utility costs, it creates a growing cost-of-living pressure on many families.

Now, it’s important to say that Jamaica’s economy has also made progress in recent years. Inflation is lower than it was a few years ago, the Jamaican dollar has been relatively stable, and unemployment has fallen to record lows.

But for many people, wages still haven’t fully caught up with the rising cost of everyday life.

Which brings us back to the big question.

Is Jamaica actually becoming too expensive to live in… or are incomes simply not rising fast enough?

And that’s The Bottom Line.
