Jamaica’s legal cannabis industry is now valued at over J$10 billion!

According to the Cannabis Licensing Authority, the industry hit about US$63 million in 2025, which is roughly J$10 billion. That’s a 63% jump in just one year.

That’s about the amount of money the country earns from exporting major non-traditional crops like yam and coffee combined. And we know Blue Mountain coffee is legendary, so the cannabis industry is making more and it’s actually becoming a serious economic player.

Now what’s driving the growth?

Well, for one, the government has made moves to open up the space. New permits and regulatory changes are making it easier for small farmers and entrepreneurs to enter the legal market.

So that means two, production is up. The numbers jumped by about 44% in 2025.  Companies are finally exporting products like oils, balms and lotions.

What all of this means is that there is real opportunity in the cannabis industry. If the market is growing this fast, companies that are already licensed have a chance to scale production, expand retail, and tap into exports.

Plus! The US just reclassified marijuana from a Schedule one drug, like cocaine or heroin, to a Schedule three substance under federal law. That means that it’s now in the same category as drugs with accepted medical use and moderate risk across all US states. Not just a few.

The move is gonna reduce restrictions around research and taxation and allow cannabis businesses to access more traditional banking and financial services.

That could make more opportunities for our cannabis companies. Collaboration on research and development, more export opportunities.

It also works out to more jobs – cultivation, processing, packaging, retail, research. This is not just farming. This is a full industry ecosystem.

And that’s the bottom line.
