Imagine getting a business loan with no interest and no collateral—Guyana’s new Development Bank is offering exactly that.
The Guyana Development Bank began operations on October 5, offering loans of up to three million Guyanese dollars—about US$14,400—to small and medium-sized businesses.
The offer is available for eligible businesses across all ten regions of Guyana, with applications through the bank’s online portal.
There are two categories: Quick Loans below three hundred thousand Guyanese dollars—about US$1440—with less paperwork, and larger SME loans up to three million Guyanese dollars—about US$14,400—requiring more supporting information.
Approved funds go directly into the borrower’s bank account, and repayments go through the banking system.
But let’s pause on something: zero interest does NOT mean you don’t have to pay it back.
This is a loan.
And no collateral doesn’t mean automatic approval. The government says the financing is for businesses with credible, viable plans.
Now, why is this such a big deal?
Collateral is something a lender can claim if you fail to repay—often property or another valuable asset.
But imagine you have a promising business and no property to pledge.
You need equipment to increase production, but you can’t get financing to buy it. Without the equipment, your business struggles to grow.
Removing that collateral requirement could help break that cycle.
And removing interest means more of the money your business earns can go towards operations and repaying the amount you borrowed.
The bank is also designed to provide business guidance, mentorship and technical support, helping entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses and eventually access commercial financing.
Here’s why I think the rest of the Caribbean should watch this closely.
Access to money is only one part of building a successful business. You also need customers, proper records and enough cash coming in to meet your obligations.
Let’s say you borrow to buy a machine.
That machine needs to help you produce something people will actually buy. And after paying for materials, staff and other expenses, you still need enough money left to make your loan payments.
A zero-interest loan can make the numbers easier. It can’t create demand for a product nobody wants.
So the real test will be what happens after the loans are approved.
Are businesses growing? Are they creating jobs? Are borrowers repaying, so the money can support more entrepreneurs?
And are applicants across the country getting fair access to the opportunity?
For business owners in Guyana, this could be a chance to turn a workable plan into an operating business—or expand one you already have.
Applications are through GDB.gov.gy. Go prepared to explain what you need the money for and how your business will repay it.
For the wider Caribbean, this is a model worth watching: affordable financing paired with support to help businesses succeed.
And that’s the bottom line.
Would a loan with no interest and no collateral help you start or grow your business?
