So the Government is ending its contract with JPS. What happens next?

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz dropped a bomb recently, when he announced that the Government would not be renewing its current licence with the Jamaica Public Service when it ends in 2027.

The licence allows JPS to be the sole electricity distributor across the island. Vaz said the move will help lower electricity costs, bring in more clean energy like solar and wind, and allow other companies to enter the market.

He also made it clear that the Government does not plan to take over JPS, but they do want a new agreement with better terms that work for Jamaicans. So they are open to renegotiating.

JPS responded by saying they are very concerned about the decision. There are still two years left on the licence and they said they plan to keep a close eye on what happens next.

So while this news came as a shock to almost everyone, it’s been met with a lot of positivity. The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica all welcomed the move.

And that makes sense because high electricity costs have been one of the biggest hurdles in manufacturing for decades.

But there are still a ton of unanswered questions. Mainly, JPS is the sole distributor of electricity in Jamaica. How would a new distributor come into play when JPS owns the light posts and the wires? And how long would it take to integrate a new player into the island-wide grid?

The Government said that the next step is to start talks with JPS and possibly other energy providers.

In the meantime, customers are not expected to experience any break in their service.

And that’s the bottom line.
