You might already have a skill you can make money from online.
The problem is, you may be spending more time thinking about the perfect idea than actually testing one.
Indeed’s 2026 career guide lists online opportunities like graphic design, video editing, virtual assistance, content writing and tutoring. The common thread? Most start with a skill you already have, or one you can build.
First, take a look at what you’re naturally good at. Write down your skills, strengths and the things people already come to you for help with. If you’re struggling to identify them, ask a trusted friend or mentor, or use an AI tool to brainstorm possible services or products based on your experience.
Next, match the skill to a problem.
Don’t just ask, “What can I sell?” Ask, “What can I help someone do?”
If you’re good at Canva, a small business may need social media templates. If you’re good at writing, someone may need help with resumes, captions or website copy. And if you know something people want to learn, that knowledge could become a guide, workbook, template or course.

You do not always need the full idea figured out before you start. Sometimes you just need to come out of your head and get into execution mode. Then, test before you overbuild.
If you want to freelance, create a simple offer and see if someone is willing to pay for it. You can test through platforms like Fiverr, or market directly through your network and social media. If you want to create a digital product, start small with a template, checklist, short guide or workbook.
Then ask: Did people show interest? Did anyone pay for it? What can I improve?
Use that feedback to decide what is worth developing further. The goal is to just try, test, learn and then focus. And before choosing an online platform to sell your digital product on, check how you will get paid, what fees apply and whether that payment method works where you live.
You don’t need a perfect business plan to start making money legitimately online.
