Remember the Indian billionaire whose son’s wedding brought out the Kardashians? Now investors are lining up for his company’s IPO!
Mukesh Ambani’s family made global headlines when his son Anant married Radhika Merchant in 2024 in one of the most lavish weddings possibly in history.
The wedding festivities reportedly cost around USD 600 million!
Now the attention is on the family’s business empire.
Jio Platforms, part of Reliance Industries, is offering shares to the public.
Jio is a telecommunications and digital services company whose mobile network serves more than 500 million subscribers in India.
The IPO opened on October 21, 2026. By the next day, Reuters reported that demand for the USD 3.2 billion offering had exceeded five times the shares available.
That’s more than five times subscribed by just its second day! This means investors have applied for way more shares than are available.
The offer could value the company at up to USD 108 billion.
For Caribbean viewers, this is a useful example of how to read an IPO headline.
A famous owner can attract attention. Strong applications can show enthusiasm. But neither tells you, by itself, whether the shares are good value.
You still need to know: how does the company make money? How much profit does it earn? What could slow its growth? And what price are investors paying for those earnings?
There’s also a difference between getting shares in an IPO and buying after trading begins.
Your access depends on the market, the offer rules and your broker.
The Ambanis know how to make headlines. Investors still need to read beyond them.
And that’s the bottom line.
Would you research a company because of its famous owner, or does celebrity make you more cautious?
