So Jamaicans are rushing back to the US dollar… but what if that’s the wrong move?

Just last week, we told you that Jamaicans moved about 95 billion dollars into US dollar accounts in 2025. That’s a 13 percent increase.

But here’s the question… are we putting too many eggs in one basket?

Equity trader at JMMB Group, Clive Charlton, thinks we need to start looking beyond the US.

Now if you’re paying attention, those are BRICS countries, which have been talking about setting up their own global currency.

And Clive pointed out that major changes are already happening in the global economy.

Countries like China and Russia are already settling some oil trades in currencies other than the US dollar—especially the Chinese yuan.  It’s not a full shift… but a signal.

Global powers are slowly trying to reduce their dependence on the US dollar.

Now why does that matter for us in Jamaica?

Well, because for years, up to half of our savings have been held in US dollars.  When things feel uncertain—like now, with Hurricane Melissa and rising global tensions—people naturally run to USD.

But the world is changing.  It’s not about abandoning the US dollar… it’s about not relying on just one currency anymore.

Remember, before the US dollar, the world ran on the British pound.  So dominance does change.

The US dollar isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but smart investors are already thinking ahead.  Because when that shift happens, you don’t want to be the last one reacting.

And that’s the bottom line.
