One of Jamaica’s biggest media companies is restructuring — and it could mean major changes for some of your favourite radio stations.
The RJR/Gleaner Communications Group says the Supreme Court of Jamaica has approved a major corporate reorganisation.
Several subsidiaries — including Multimedia Jamaica, Independent Radio Company, Gleaner Online, Reggae Entertainment Television, and Jamaica News Network — will now be merged into Radio Jamaica Limited.
In simple terms, the group is consolidating multiple companies into one structure.
The goal is to eliminate duplication, streamline operations, and create a leaner organisation as the media industry rapidly shifts toward digital platforms. But the bigger story may be what’s happening with radio.
RJR has asked the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and the Spectrum Management Authority for permission to temporarily suspend the licences for two stations — Power 106 FM and HITZ 92 FM.
The company says this will give them time to repair infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Melissa and reassess the long-term future of those stations.
In the meantime, the group will focus on strengthening its main radio brands — Radio Jamaica 94FM and FAME 95 FM.
And there’s another big possibility.
The company says it is also considering whether it might sell one or both of those stations. So this restructuring isn’t just about corporate paperwork — it could reshape Jamaica’s radio landscape.
And that’s the Bottom Line.
