If you run a small business in the Caribbean, this could be one of the biggest changes to hit WhatsApp since the app was launched.
Meta has unveiled a new AI-powered Business Agent that could allow businesses to answer customer questions, book appointments, recommend products, process orders and even complete sales automatically through WhatsApp.
And for a region where thousands of businesses already use WhatsApp as their primary sales channel, the implications could be huge.
At Meta’s annual Conversations conference in London, the company laid out a vision where every business has its own AI assistant.
“A couple of years ago I said every business would have an AI agent like you all have an email address, website and social media account. That’s happening faster than I expected.”

Meta says businesses can start using the AI agent for free, although the company plans to introduce paid subscription tiers in the coming months.
Think about how many Caribbean businesses operate today.
A customer sends a WhatsApp message asking for a quote. Someone has to manually respond.
Another customer wants to book an appointment. Someone has to manually respond.
A third customer asks about prices, availability or delivery. Again, somebody has to stop what they’re doing and answer.
Meta believes AI can now handle many of those routine conversations automatically.
According to the company, businesses can train the AI using information already available on their Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, websites and product catalogues. The system can then answer questions, recommend products and hand customers over to a human employee when necessary.

Meta says more than one million businesses are already using its AI agents across WhatsApp and Messenger, and the technology is now being rolled out globally.
But the company isn’t stopping there.
It also announced new discovery features that will make it easier for customers to find businesses directly inside WhatsApp.
Soon, users will be able to search for participating businesses by name, start a conversation instantly and interact with the company’s AI agent without ever leaving the app.
Meta is also introducing business usernames, making it easier for customers to connect without needing a phone number.
And perhaps the most significant development is that WhatsApp is evolving into a complete shopping platform.
Meta demonstrated how customers will eventually be able to browse products, ask questions, book appointments, place orders and even make payments directly inside a chat conversation.
In other words, WhatsApp is becoming much more than a messaging app.
Meta wants it to become a storefront, customer service desk, booking platform and sales representative all rolled into one.

For Caribbean entrepreneurs, that could mean responding to customers 24 hours a day without hiring additional staff.
For consumers, it could mean faster responses and a smoother buying experience.
But it also raises a bigger question.
If AI can answer questions, process orders and close sales, how many customer service jobs will still require a human being?
