
Jamaican Entrepreneurs Building Custom Furniture
Boardroom Furnishing is putting a fresh spin on Jamaica’s furniture industry by creating modern, custom pieces from locally sourced wood and delivering them on time.
The business, run by young entrepreneurs Dhanyel Johnson and Edson Hunt, started from a very personal frustration.
Speaking on Taking Stock with Kalilah Reynolds, the couple said they once ordered furniture while preparing for their first child and never received it. That experience led them to start their own company with a promise to do better.
“Everything we do is handmade, fully handmade from start to finish,” Johnson explained. “We use real wood, cedar, mahogany, oak and its all cut, treated, sanded, and finished by our team.”
What sets Boardroom Furnishing apart is not just the quality of its work but also the professionalism behind it. Johnson and Hunt knew from the beginning that customers needed more than nice furniture; they needed trust.
Every deposit comes with a receipt, communication is clear, and updates are given throughout the process. That kind of reliability has quickly built them a loyal following across the island.
The duo faced challenges, especially during the pandemic when supply chains collapsed. Instead of waiting on overseas shipments, they turned to local lumberyards, keeping their business moving and supporting Jamaican farmers at the same time.
“The craftsmanship we have locally is just flawless,” Johnson said. “I don’t think anybody does it better than us.”
Their designs lean modern and minimal, often inspired by popular global brands like IKEA but made sturdier with solid wood instead of compressed boards. A custom dresser can cost under $100,000 JMD, while beds range from $110,000 to $250,000 JMD, depending on style. The company delivers islandwide and is now preparing to open a small showroom so customers who don’t want to wait can pick up ready-made pieces.
Johnson and Hunt said their mission is simple: create stylish, durable furniture, support local materials, and treat customers with respect.
